The Lám Test is a diagnostic tool based on the theory of emotion-thinking, used to explore the priority of each of the threefold needs and expectations at a deeper level in each moment of an individual's life. In other words, this diagnostic tool is effective in humans and has diagnostic and therapeutic aspects, used in follow-up sessions to assess progress. The Lám Test consists of two parts: the Simple Lám Test, which consists of 40 consecutive Persian "L" letters, and the Compound Lám Test, which is located behind the page and includes a shape. In this test, the individual must complete the letters "L" as they wish, and it should be noted that the name of each one should be written underneath. These completions are done with a pencil and without the use of any other tools. Important concepts that are influential in the individual's life are examined in this test. When the number of drawn "L" letters is low, it means that the concepts have been filtered for the individual and indicates the more important concepts of their life. At this stage, the individual's image is transformed into meaning and is depicted on paper, indicating the value and power of that concept for the individual. These concepts have cognitive, moral, and emotional aspects, and according to the protocol, each of the shapes falls into one of the individual's needs or expectations groups. By examining the individual's expectations regarding a specific matter, a general picture of the cognitive, attitudinal, moral, motivational, and personality roots of the individual can be obtained. Expectations emerge in the trajectory of a process from needs, and needs, in interaction with temperament, ability, thought, feeling, and attachment, shape expectations. Therefore, expectations indicate the individual's abilities, personality traits, specific needs, thought patterns, emotions, types of attachment and relationships, or overall, personal identity. Life satisfaction depends on meeting expectations and unrealistic expectations may lead to psychological disorders.

The ten expectations are:

  • 1. Stability: Navigating through life without feeling confused, being on a path of growth without feeling stagnant, having health without worrying about survival, and feeling useful and satisfied with personal work without comparing oneself to others or feeling envy.
  • 2. Significance: Beliefs based on individual spirituality are attended to, and encouragement is expected in a way that loneliness will not be felt during difficulties.
  • 3. Self-achievement: Achieving progress in anticipated success without feeling dependent on others in life.
  • 4. Excellence: Personal dynamism and purposeful efficiency in being the best in a way that others value the individual's perspectives.
  • 5. Individuality: Having sufficient freedom and personal independence along with striving for self-awareness and good understanding of others, leading to influence on others.
  • 6. Support: Feeling comfortable due to having a guide in life, appropriate companionship, cooperation from others, support in difficulties, and acceptance of the environment.
  • 7. Authenticity: Feeling vitality and mental peace based on achieving a meaningful life that leads to life satisfaction.
  • 8. Eminence: Feeling successful by achieving a worthy position in life and feeling progress in life by reaching the top rank with excellent opportunities, which includes personal fame satisfaction.
  • 9. Spirituality: Meaning that spirituality is rooted in the individual's life, adhering to religious values, and observing spiritual values.
  • 10. Influence: Happiness from influencing others, happiness from nurturing, affection of individuals in life, and immortality.

Reviewing and revising expectations brings satisfaction to the visitor during the counseling period, as people live according to their expectations. The goal of psychotherapy is to bring individuals to their own advancement period.

The Lám analysis components are:

  • 1. Fluidity: The number of different Láms written.
  • 2. Emotionality: Emotions are manifested in any form in writing or shape.
  • 3. Independence: The written concept should be a single word.
  • 4. Complexity: The meaningful part of the shape is within the bowl of the Lám.
  • 5. Breadth: Drawings that are beyond the limit of the Lám.
  • 6. Realism: The written concept exists in the real world.
  • 7. Vitality: The written concept has vitality.
  • 8. Composition: More than one Lám is involved in one concept.
  • 9. Movement: Movement in the shape or writing, actively indicated in any way.

These eight components are common with the Compound Lám. In the Compound Lám, we do not have fluidity.
